Case Studies: Overview | INTASC | The Framework for Teaching | NBPTS

The following case studies highlight three different comprehensive teacher evaluation systems - the Framework for Teaching, the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) - which have created performance standards and rubrics for teachers of all specialties. Each page includes an overview and key elements of the evaluation system and a resources section with links to tools and additional information. For a brief overview of each page, see the descriptions below.

Framework for Teaching
The Framework for Teaching, created by Charlotte Danielson, is a comprehensive and coherent framework that identifies those aspects of a teacher's responsibilities that have been documented as promoting improved student learning. The Danielson Group trains districts to use the Framework as the foundation of a teacher evaluation system that serves two main purposes - quality assurance and professional learning. This page discusses the key characteristics of a successful evaluation system and provides links to several tools and books aligned with the Framework.

Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC)
The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) is a consortium of state education agencies, independent professional standards boards, and national educational organizations dedicated to reforming the preparation, licensing, and ongoing professional development of teachers. INTASC focuses on licensing new teachers, but its standards and processes have served as the basis for many systems that evaluate teachers at all stages of their careers. This page highlights the process of assessing teacher performance for licensing and evaluation and provides examples of differentiated standards used to evaluate teachers in specific disciplines.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nongovernmental organization. It has advanced the quality of teaching and learning by developing professional standards for accomplished teaching; creating and administering National Board Certification, a voluntary system to certify teachers who meet those standards; and integrating certified teachers into educational reform efforts. This page provides a concrete example of an external performance-based assessment system.
