Case Studies: Overview | CEC | MITUL

The following case studies provide additional information on how union leaders can be trained to implement a vision of progressive change. The Consortium for Educational Change works specifically with union locals in the Midwest, while the Tom Mooney Institute for Teacher and Union Leadership develops the skills and capacity of emerging teacher union leaders nationwide. Both efforts have grown out of the work of the Teacher Union Reform Network (TURN). Each case study page includes an overview and key elements of the training and a resources section with links to tools and additional information. For a brief overview of each page, see the descriptions below.

Consortium for Educational Change (CEC)
In partnership with the Illinois Education Association and the Great Lakes TURN Network, the Consortium for Educational Change has developed a training series for comprehensive union leadership development. The training aims to (1) engage emerging and veteran union leaders and staff in a comprehensive union leadership initiative, (2) establish a cohort of local union leaders to network and learn from each other, (3) plan and implement a comprehensive organizing initiative, and (4) develop and implement a strategic planning process for union locals.

The Tom Mooney Institute for Teacher and Union Leadership (MITUL)
The Tom Mooney Institute for Teacher and Union Leadership (MITUL) aims to develop the leadership skills and organizational capacity of emerging progressive teacher unionists. MITUL grew out of the efforts of the Teacher Union Reform Network (TURN), which since 1995 has helped to foster a national community around the union’s role in progressive reform. The institute’s mission is to help prepare next-generation union leaders to employ a progressive vision of the role of the teachers union in advocating for and implementing change. In January 2005, nine urban locals were invited to be part of the first cohort of leaders.
